What are Therapy Dogs?

Therapy Dogs are family companion dogs, who are evaluated by our animal behaviourist partners, for temperament to participate in Therapy Dog work. We are not affiliated to SA Guide Dogs, SPCA, or any other rescue, or working dog associations in SA.

Therapy Dogs live with their human families in their homes. They often have dog, or other animal, brothers and sisters too.

At Angel Paws Therapy Dogs, we believe therapy dogs are BORN not made. We like our dogs to have a bit of good manners training, but the temperament of the dog, and his love of human contact, is most important. Our working dogs love humans and being touched. We can confidently say they love to interact with the people that they meet.

Angel Paws Therapy Dogs have a strict hygiene and health protocol to follow. The dogs are bathed regularly, and groomed before visits. We also check that they are in good health and parasite free.

1. Animal-Assisted Activity
Our dogs are household pets whose handlers take time to visit hospitals, frail-care facilities, schools, nursing homes, businesses, and rehabilitation facilities. Patients and learners benefit from the calming effects of our qualified therapy dogs.

2. Animal-Assisted Therapy
Dogs and handlers work one-to-one in a goal-oriented programme, be it physical rehabilitation, reading improvement, or occupational or trauma counselling. These dogs assist physical and occupational therapists in meeting goals pertinent to a person’s recovery. Tasks that a dog can help achieve include gaining motion in the limbs and fine motor control. This helps motivate them in their therapy or treatment.

3. Animal-Assisted Education
Using our therapy dogs we teach schools and children’s organizations about basic dog care, bite avoidance, and safe dog interaction.

How It Helps

Touching and interacting with dogs (and other pets) has known, and measurable effects on endocrine levels in human bodies. Scientific studies have shown that animal interactions stimulate the release of “feel good” chemicals in our bodies. This can help us become more alert, improve our sleep, and improve our sense of self- esteem and happiness.

The dogs are non-judgmental in their approach to people. They are trusting and accepting, which allows those they meet the chance to engage in a gentle, stress-free 'dialogue'.

How You Can Help

We are always looking for suitable handlers and dogs, so get in touch with us.

If volunteering is not an option, then you can consider making a donation to help with the costs of insurance, running expenses, and producing and disseminating, marketing, and educational material. We are a registered Public Benefit Organisation (9929/132/18/2) that is able to issue IT18A certificates for corporate donations.
